Not all, only card holders below poverty line eligible for Rs.1000 Pongal gift - Madras HC

The Madras High Court today ordered the Tamil Nadu government to offer the Rs 1000 Pongal cash gift to families Below the Poverty Line only (BPL).

The Madras High Court today ordered the Tamil Nadu government to offer the Rs 1000 Pongal cash gift to families Below the Poverty Line only (BPL).

Hearing a PIL filed by Coimbatore-based activist Daniel, the Madras High Court questioned the state government’s decision to offer the cash gift for all ration card holders and questioned its purpose. The Court criticized the State government and reportedly asked why High Court judges and advocate general need the Rs 1000 cash gift.

Hearing the plea, the Court directed the government to pay a cash gift to families with BPL cards. However, the Court hasn’t restricted the distribution of other Pongal gift hampers to all ration card holders.
