K Balakrishnan said, “The Supreme Court’s judgment on Sterlite issue is disappointing. The plant can be shut permanently only through an ordinance. The Tamil Nadu government has got double standards on the issue. Government should fight this case using proper documents. We will continue our protests against the plant.”
Regarding the 48-hour strike, Balakrishnan said, “The strike is a huge success.” He added that while most MSMEs are nearing closure in the State, the second investors’ summit is just to deceive entrepreneurs.
Balakrishnan said that the Cuddalore court has passed a historic judgment in the POCSO case and it would act as a deterrent for pedophiles. “It was only because of the party’s intervention the case got registered. There are no mechanisms in the State to stop sexual assault against children. A separate division must be formed in police to investigate POCSO cases”, he said.
The CPI(M) secretary called the BJP’s recent reservation for economically backward people as an election tactic. “The bill has been brought without any discussion. The BJP’s attempts will not succeed”, he said. He added that the AIADMK is fearing elections and alleged that there is only corruption and irregularities under this regime.
Regarding Sabarimala, Balakrishnan said that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is functioning efficiently on the issue. “Human rights cannot be denied in the name of religion”, he said. On the farmers’ strike, Balakrishnan said that electric line should be taken underground and at places where towers have to be built, necessary rent should be paid to landowners. Balakrishnan also criticized Governor Banwari Lal Purohit’s decision to make sit an official alongside Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker.
On the State government’s decision to gift Rs 1000 for Pongal, Balakrishnan critically said, “The State government hasn’t been able to properly implement even schemes introduced by Jayalalithaa like distribution of free cattle animals, laptops, cycles and others. I doubt whether the distribution of Rs 1000 would happen properly.”
