The Election Commission of India has cancelled the by-election of the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency.

The Election Commission of India has cancelled the by-election of the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency.

The Election Commission said it had cancelled the Tiruvarur by-election following a report of the Tiruvarur district electoral office that it was not conducive to hold the by-election as Cyclone Gaja relief had not yet reached many areas of the constituency.

In a press release, Election Commissioner, Ashok Lavasa stated, "The by-election to fill the above vacancy in the Assembly will be held by the Commission in due course, when the situation becomes conductive to the holding of free and fair peaceful elections. The Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary has written a letter to the Election Commission not to hold the by-election in the State before April this year."
