A sloth bear entered the village of Sogathorai Thenalai in search of food and was growling while it wandered about the village. Villagers who spotted it informed the forest department personnel immediately.
In the meanwhile, the bear which escaped from the village entered the nearby tea estate and camped there.
Fearing an attack from the bear, the estate workers have failed to turn up for duty today.
The villagers have appealed to the forest staff to capture the bear by laying a trap and translocate it into deep forests.
