Coimbatore : A 50-year-old tree near the Coimbatore railway junction fell on to the busy State bank road today and traffic got affected for over an hour in the area. No casualties were reported.

Important government offices like City, Rural police headquarters, District Collectorate, and District Fire Office are located on this road. This often contributed to heavy traffic in the area. Recently, drainage works were started between district collectorate and railway station. The road was dug along the stretch and the 50-year-old Vadha Narayana tree was located in front of Revenue District Officer’s office here.

As the soil by the tree’s roots got loosened due to the drainage works, losing strength, the tree fell on to the road today. Firefighters immediately rushed to the spot and started efforts to remove the tree. Traffic got affected for over an hour in the area.

However, none got injured as the public weren’t present in the premises at that time. Several activists have been warning officials here that the tree could fall any day but it fell on deaf ears.
