Coimbatore: The Social Welfare Department has stated that it has no intention of closing noon meal centres.

Recently, it was said that 8000 noon meal centres with less than 25 students in 31 districts other than Chennai will be closed.

Following this, it was alleged that noon meal centres in 150 schools in Coimbatore would be shut. Meanwhile, condemning the decision, the Noon Meal Workers Association had announced a protest in front of the District Collectorates across the State, on December 27.

The Social Welfare Department in response has categorically stated that it had no intention of closing noon meal centres. A statement issued in this regard notes, "If the noon meals for Classes 1 to 5 and Classes 6 to 10 function separately in a school, it will be combined into a single centre, based on the strength. The decision was taken due to the increase in vacancies in noon meal centres."
