Tirupur’s Uzhavar Sandhai on strike, 500-ton vegetables stagnate

Tirupur: Supporting the farmers protesting against the installation of electric transmission towers, Uzhavar Sandhai in and around Tirupur is on a one- day strike, leading to the stagnation of 500-ton vegetables.

Tirupur: Supporting the farmers protesting against the installation of electric transmission towers, Uzhavar Sandhai in and around Tirupur is on a one- day strike, leading to the stagnation of 500-ton vegetables. 



Farmers of 14 districts including Tirupur, Coimbatore and Erode have been protesting for the past five days against the erection of electric transmission towers in agricultural fields. The Uzhavar Sandhai in Tirupur South, Tirupur North, Avinashi, Palladam and Kangeyam are closed today in support of the farmers’ protest.



“Around 1000 shops in these areas were closed owing to which 500 tonnes of vegetables became stagnant, accounting to a loss of Rs.25 lakhs. Around five lakh people, street vendors and small-scale vegetable sellers will be affected due to this protest,” said Iswaran, Chief of Katchi Saarbatra Vivasayigal Sangam.
