Coimbatore : A special team of Police nabbed a gang involved in idol theft and burglary of gold ornaments from the temples in and around Sulur.
Repeated Idol theft incidents were reported at temples in Sulur, Palladam, Mangalam, and Sulthanpet from December 9.
Following this, the residents filed a complaint with the Police. A special police team under Baskaran, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karumathampatti sub-division, was formed to nab the idol burglars.
Meanwhile, on the wee hours of Wednesday, the special police team intercepted a two-wheeler at Kasikavundanpudur pirivu, as they grew suspicious over the person in the vehicle, he was taken to Sulur Police Station for investigation.
Upon interrogation the man was identified as Vannappan (52) of Appanaikkanpatti here and was involved in idol theft in and around Sulur.
Based on the information gathered from him, Police arrested his gang members who were identified as Murugesh (48), Vadivelan (32) and Thirumoorthy (18). Police seized 2 idols, gold necklace and silver utensils accounting to Rs 5,31,800.
The gang was then lodged at Coimbatore Central Prison after being produced before Sulur Court. Public have appreciated the swift action of the Police in nabbing the offenders.
