Coimbatore: Condemning the erection of new High Tension (HT) power grid lines for power distribution and transmission through cultivable lands, as well as demanding better compensation, affected farmers have staged a sit-in dharna at Sultanpettai.
This is part of the on-going protests in eight centers in all 13 districts where the project is underway in western Tamil Nadu, despite opposition from farmers. It is being implemented by the Power Grid Corporation of India, in association with TANGEDCO. The farmers noted that officials have gone ahead with work despite farmers opposing the project which would fragment cultivable lands.
The 13 districts of Coimbatore Tiruppur, Namakkal, Salem, Dindigul and Dharmapuri will be highly affected as this project would spell doom for the livelihood of small and marginal farmers, and the farming community in general.
