First Wi-Fi Hotspot in Arunachal pradesh launched

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday launched the first free wi-fi hotspot in the state at a government college in Itanagar.

"This pilot project has been launched in a centre of learning to bring internet closer to the students and faculty to make them at par with other premier technical institutes across the country in the field of education and research," he said.

Mr. Khandu said the government has plans to make the twin towns of Itanagar and Naharlagun a free wi-fi zone and it would be a step towards digitisation of the country, which is a vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The state government would also in the future try to connect the villages with internet facility to associate them in government policies and programmes as a part of Digital India programme, he said.

The internet facility at Dera Natung Government College will allow access to information and improve data communication to help in faster transfer of information between college officials and students.

"It will also open up new opportunities for the college to offer new environment to its students and faculty for better education and research options over the internet free of cost," Mr Khandu said.

The wi-fi hot spot was conceptualised by state Department of Information Technology and Communication keeping in mind the Digital India programme and set up at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh which was provided by the state government in 2015-2016.

Each of the 15 access points of the secured network will provide internet facility in around 50-70 m radius of area of the college and are denied access to unwanted phishing, spamming and malware sites, Secretary to Information Technology department Sonam Chombay said.
