About 200 students took part in a rabies (Rabies) prevention and awareness programme held on September 25, 2026 at Ramanathapuram Corporation Higher Secondary School, under Ward 63 of Coimbatore Corporation's Central Zone. Organised jointly by Coimbatore Corporation and Humane Animal Society (HAS), the event covered rabies prevention methods, dos and don'ts around community dogs, the importance of Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV), and immediate steps to take after a dog bite. The programme ended with students and teachers taking a pledge towards achieving a Rabies-Free Coimbatore 2030.
Coimbatore: A rabies (Rabies) prevention and awareness programme organised by Coimbatore Corporation was held on September 25, 2026 at Ramanathapuram Corporation Higher Secondary School, which falls under Ward 63 of the Central Zone, with about 200 students taking part.
The programme was jointly conducted by Coimbatore Corporation and Humane Animal Society (HAS). Corporation Veterinary Doctor Varunkumar spoke in detail to the students about rabies, its prevention methods, and the dos and don'ts to be followed while approaching community dogs.
Students were also made aware of the importance of administering Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) to community dogs and the role vaccination plays in preventing the spread of rabies. Following this, the steps to be taken immediately after a dog bite were explained. It was specifically stressed that the wound must be thoroughly washed with soap and running water, and the person should go to a hospital without delay to receive proper medical treatment and vaccination as advised by a doctor.
Students were further explained how to identify dogs that may be affected by rabies and how to observe unusual behaviour in them. They were told not to approach or handle suspicious dogs and to immediately inform the concerned officials. They were also urged that everyone must work together to build a rabies-free Coimbatore by 2030 through harmonious coexistence between humans and animals, responsible animal care, and integrated community participation.
At the conclusion of the programme, all students and school teachers took a pledge to achieve the goal of "Rabies-Free Coimbatore 2030" in the presence of the Corporation Veterinary Doctor.
