Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has announced emergency helplines following reports of 57 pilgrims from the state being stranded in Nepal after catastrophic flash floods struck the region on August 26, 2024. The disaster has claimed at least 95 lives with hundreds still missing.

The stranded group comprises pilgrims from Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts who had undertaken a religious pilgrimage to Nepal through a private tour operator. They were reportedly trapped near the Nepal-Tibet border in Rasuwa district when flash floods devastated the region.

State government officials confirmed that rescue and coordination efforts are underway in collaboration with the Union Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to locate and evacuate the Tamil Nadu pilgrims safely.

To assist affected families and individuals, the Tamil Nadu government has announced round-the-clock helpline numbers operational 24/7.

Helpline Numbers:

• Toll-free within India: 1800 309 3793

• International missed call facility: +91 80 6900 9900

• Direct contact number: +91 80 6900 9901

• Tamil Nadu House Control Room, New Delhi: 92895 16712

Authorities have urged families of pilgrims who travelled to Nepal recently to contact these helplines for information and assistance. The State government is maintaining continuous communication with central authorities to monitor the situation and expedite rescue operations.

Reports indicate that while some members of the pilgrim group have been accounted for, efforts continue to trace the remaining individuals. The Indian Embassy in Nepal is coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety and swift evacuation of all Indian nationals affected by the natural disaster.

The flash floods in Nepal's Rasuwa district have caused widespread devastation, with rescue operations hampered by difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. The Tamil Nadu government has assured full support to affected families during this crisis.
