Coimbatore: IndiGo airlines reinstated direct flight services between Coimbatore and Abu Dhabi on 15 August 2026, providing the textile city with its second direct air link to the Middle East region. This resumption marks a significant milestone in expanding international connectivity from Coimbatore International Airport.

The airport witnessed remarkable passenger traffic yesterday, with international movement crossing the 1,000-passenger mark for both inbound and outbound travelers. Passengers traveled to three key international destinations including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Singapore. Aviation stakeholders have expressed hope that IndiGo will soon introduce direct services connecting Coimbatore to Colombo, further enhancing regional connectivity.

Domestic air travel remained robust with approximately 8,000 passengers utilizing flight services yesterday. The domestic network connected Coimbatore to major metropolitan cities including Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Goa. This extensive domestic connectivity continues to serve business travelers, tourists, and residents effectively.

The airport recorded a total of 52 aircraft movements yesterday, handling more than 9,000 passengers collectively across both domestic and international sectors. This significant footfall demonstrates the growing importance of Coimbatore as an aviation hub in Tamil Nadu.

Industry experts believe that additional flight frequencies to Chennai, Pune, and Delhi, combined with enhanced international connectivity, will substantially boost trade opportunities, tourism inflow, investment prospects, and overall economic growth in the Coimbatore region. The expanded air connectivity is expected to strengthen the city's position as a major industrial and commercial center in South India.
