Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan Awarded President’s Medal for Meritorious Service

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan, IPS, was conferred the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a State-level ceremony in Chennai, where 633 personnel from various uniformed services were honoured for their distinguished service.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan, IPS, was on Friday conferred the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at a State-level investiture ceremony held in Chennai to honour personnel from various uniformed services for their distinguished service.

The prestigious medal was presented to Dr. Kannan at the ceremony held at Rajarathinam Stadium, Egmore, in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the Tamil Nadu Police.

During the event, the Chief Minister presented the President’s Police Medal, the Union Home Minister’s Medal, and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal to 633 personnel from various uniformed services under different categories.

The awardees included personnel from the Tamil Nadu Police, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Fire and Rescue Services, Prisons and Correctional Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence, and the Forensic Sciences Department, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to public service.

Dr. N. Kannan assumed charge as the Commissioner of Coimbatore City Police on January 3, 2026, succeeding A. Saravana Sundar, who was transferred as Inspector General of Police, West Zone. A senior IPS officer, he previously served as Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), South, Greater Chennai Police, and has held key assignments as Inspector General of Police for the North Zone, South Zone, and Armed Police, Chennai.

Since joining the Indian Police Service, Dr. Kannan has served as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kovilpatti, and as Superintendent of Police in Kanniyakumari, Sivaganga, Coimbatore and Krishnagiri districts. He has also served on Central deputation with the Intelligence Bureau and as First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Nepal, before returning to Tamil Nadu as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) in 2019.
