The Coimbatore City Police have clarified that an assault reported at Mathampalayam under the limits of PN Palayam Police Station stemmed from prior enmity and not from a tip-off about ganja trafficking, contrary to allegations made by the injured youth in a viral social media video.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have dismissed allegations made in a viral social media video by a youth who claimed he was assaulted for tipping off the police about a narcotics racket, stating that the incident stemmed from a personal dispute and had no connection to drug-related activities.
The clarification comes after a video circulated online in which the injured youth alleged that he had informed Periyanaickenpalayam Police about a ganja trafficking racket and was subsequently attacked by a gang. He also claimed that the police acted in a one-sided manner in favour of the accused instead of protecting him and presently undergoing treatment for his injuries.
According to an official statement issued by the police, the assault took place near Lattu Vinayagar Temple at Mathampalayam on July 19 within the limits of PN Palayam Police Station. The victim, Balaji (21) of Vallalar Nagar, Shanthimedu, sustained injuries in the attack.
The accused have been identified as Salman (19), Sahil (16), Inayathulla (21) and Ayyup (17), all residents of Mathampalayam, Bilichi.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Balaji and Salman were acquainted and had prior enmity. On the day of the incident, Balaji had gone to the locality to play cricket when an argument allegedly broke out after he misunderstood certain remarks made while Salman and a few children were playing in front of a relative’s house. During the altercation, Balaji allegedly kicked Salman, following which Salman and his relatives allegedly assaulted him, causing injuries.
While undergoing treatment on July 20, Balaji allegedly circulated a video on social media claiming that the assault was linked to ganja trafficking and sought action from the district authorities.
However, the enquiry conducted so far has found that both parties belong to the same locality and have known each other for several years. According to the police, the assault appears to have resulted from prior enmity and the quarrel on the day of the incident. No material has been found so far to establish any link between the attack and narcotic activities.
Based on Balaji’s complaint, PN Palayam Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police said Inayathulla, the third accused, has been arrested. Two juveniles allegedly involved in the incident are being traced, while efforts are under way to secure the remaining absconding accused.
The police have urged the public not to believe or circulate unverified information regarding the incident on social media. Further investigation is under way.
