After being declared brain dead following a road accident, one kidney and both eyes of a 75-year-old man were donated, giving hope to patients awaiting transplants. Before handing over his body, the Dean, doctors and healthcare staff of Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital paid their final respects.

Coimbatore: In a heartwarming act of generosity, the family of a 75-year-old road accident victim donated his organs after he was declared brain dead at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital, enabling multiple patients to benefit from the life-saving gesture.

The deceased, Gopalakrishnan (75), a resident of TVS Nagar in Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore, sustained critical injuries in a road accident on July 1 and had been undergoing intensive treatment at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he was declared brain dead.

Following counselling by the hospital's organ donation team, Gopalakrishnan's family consented to donate his organs. Owing to his age and medical suitability, one kidney and both his eyes were donated to benefit patients awaiting transplantation.

Before handing over the body to the family, Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital Dean, doctors, nurses and healthcare staff paid their final respects to Gopalakrishnan, honouring his family’s selfless decision to save and improve the lives of others through organ donation.

Hospital authorities said the donation would benefit multiple recipients and reiterated that age alone is not a barrier to organ donation, as organs are considered for transplantation based on their medical suitability. They also appealed to the public to support organ donation, describing it as a priceless gift that offers hope and a second chance at life to patients awaiting transplants.
