Seven Decades of Healthcare Excellence: GKNM Hospital Marks 74th Founders’ Day, Honours Staff

Coimbatore’s GKNM Hospital celebrated its 74th Founders’ Day on Saturday, highlighting its seven-decade journey that includes establishing one of Tamil Nadu’s dedicated cancer centres with research facilities and performing the state’s first heart transplant under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

Coimbatore: G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital celebrated its 74th Founders’ Day on Saturday, marking more than seven decades of dedicated healthcare service and recognising the contributions of its employees who have played a pivotal role in the institution’s growth.

The celebrations were held at Mani Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore in the presence of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan, IPS, who participated as the chief guest. The event was also attended by office-bearers of the Kuppuswamy Naidu Charity Trust, senior administrators, doctors, nurses and hospital staff.

Employees who have rendered exemplary service to the institution were honoured with Distinguished Service Awards, Performance Excellence Awards and Meritorious Service Awards in recognition of their dedication, commitment and contribution to patient care.

Tracing its journey since its inception, the hospital highlighted its transformation from a modest 50-bed mother-and-child hospital into one of South India’s leading 750-bed multi-specialty healthcare institutions.

Among its major milestones, GKNM Hospital pointed to its Integrated Out-Patient Centre (GKNM iOP), recognised by the Asia Book of Records as Asia’s Largest Integrated Out-Patient Centre. The facility houses more than 30 medical specialties, over 300 doctors, advanced diagnostic services and same-day surgical care, while also integrating Yoga, Naturopathy and Acupuncture with modern medicine.

The hospital has also expanded its healthcare outreach beyond its main campus through home healthcare services across Coimbatore, a rural health centre at Veerapandi and Raksha, its dedicated hospice providing palliative and end-of-life care.

Highlighting its clinical achievements, the hospital said it had established one of Tamil Nadu’s dedicated cancer centres with research facilities, facilitated more than 1.5 lakh childbirths, performed over 1.5 lakh cardiac catheterisation procedures and more than 50,000 cardiac surgeries, besides carrying out Tamil Nadu’s first heart transplant under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).

GKNM Hospital has also been recognised as an Advanced Stroke Centre, offering comprehensive stroke care supported by advanced imaging and rehabilitation services. More recently, it received accreditation as a Centre of Excellence for Safe Endoscopy Services from the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations (CAHO).

As the institution steps into its 75th year, the hospital reaffirmed its commitment to advancing clinical excellence, embracing innovation and expanding access to quality, patient-centred healthcare for communities across the region.
