No Power Tariff Hike This Year: SIMA Thanks Tamil Nadu Government

The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) has welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement that there will be no power tariff increase this year, hailing it as a major relief for the textile industry and a positive step towards improving industrial competitiveness in the State.

COIMBATORE: The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) has thanked the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Minister for Energy Resources and Law for announcing that there will be no power tariff increase in the State during the current year.

In a statement, SIMA Chairman Durai Palanisamy said a delegation from the association had met the Chief Minister on May 20, 2026, and urged the government not to increase electricity tariff during the current year in order to safeguard the survival of the textile industry in Tamil Nadu and help it capitalise on emerging global opportunities.

He said the association had also appealed to the government to support investments in the textile sector under various schemes announced by both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments, and added that the Chief Minister and the Minister for Energy Resources had responded positively to SIMA’s request.

Thanking the Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Minister for Energy Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar for the decision not to revise power tariff this year, SIMA president stated that the announcement would provide much-needed relief to the textile industry.

He also appreciated the proactive initiatives taken by the Energy Department, including the release of a White Paper and the preparation of a long-term plan to make TANGEDCO financially viable, complete pending maintenance and backlog projects in a time-bound manner, and evolve a strategy beneficial to both consumers and the utility.

Stating that the government’s announcement was a step in the right direction, Durai Palanisamy said the decision would support industrial growth and contribute towards Tamil Nadu’s goal of becoming a 1.5 trillion dollar economy by 2035.
