Rs. 14.83 lakh seized in a day during election vehicle checks in Coimbatore

During election vehicle checks on March 20 in Coimbatore, flying squads seized ₹14.83 lakh cash, taking total seizures since March 16 to over ₹1.80 crore across all constituencies.

Coimbatore: Election flying squads seized a total of ₹14.83 lakh in cash in a single day on March 20 during intensified vehicle inspections across Coimbatore district.

Officials said that checks were conducted across all 10 Assembly constituencies, and since March 16, total seizures have crossed ₹1.80 crore. This includes gold and silver worth ₹44 lakh, gift items worth ₹29 lakh and liquor bottles valued at ₹51,000.

In Ukkadam, ₹2.21 lakh was seized from two individuals, while 800 gas stoves transported without proper documents were also confiscated and handed over to election authorities.

In Sulur near Jallipatti, ₹51,500 was seized from a Tiruppur-based individual as it exceeded the permitted ₹50,000 limit without valid documents. In another case, ₹1.50 lakh was seized from a vegetable trader from Palakkad near Sultanpet.

In Coimbatore North constituency, ₹2.50 lakh was seized by static surveillance teams during routine checks.

In Mettupalayam constituency, multiple seizures were reported including ₹74,650, ₹63,520, ₹74,620, ₹2.50 lakh and ₹3 lakh from different individuals at various locations. A total of ₹7.62 lakh was seized in that constituency alone in a single day.

All seized cash was handed over to election officials and deposited in the treasury as per procedure. Authorities stated that continuous monitoring and strict vehicle checks will continue to enforce election code norms across the district.
