Two-wheeler rider falls into overflowing underground sewage in Tirupur; rescued, search for vehicle underway

Heavy rains in Tirupur led to flooding in residential areas. A two-wheeler rider fell into an overflowing underground sewage near Sri Sakthi Theater. The rider was rescued, but the search for the vehicle continues.

Tirupur: Heavy rains lashed various parts of Tirupur city from yesterday evening until midnight. The Tirupur South constituency alone recorded 9.6 cm of rainfall in a single day.

The downpour caused flooding in several residential areas across the city. In Vanjipalayam Jayalalitha Nagar, more than 40 houses were inundated, forcing residents to seek shelter in a nearby community hall. Essential supplies, including food, were provided to the affected families.

Similar flooding occurred in areas like Muthaiyannagar and Ananda Avenue, with over 50 houses affected.

Many roads were submerged, leading to traffic disruptions last night. Since early morning today, the district and municipal administrations have been working to mitigate the damage caused by the rains throughout Tirupur city.

In a concerning incident, near Sri Sakthi Theater on Ishwaran Kovil Street, the underground sewage system overflowed, mixing with rainwater. The upper portion of the sewage system collapsed, causing a flood-like situation on the road. Police were deployed to manage traffic in the area.

Unexpectedly, Thanasekharan (40), a resident of Sevanthampalaiyam, was riding his two-wheeler in the area unaware of the collapsed sewage system. He fell into the 20-foot deep underground sewage pit along with his vehicle. Bystanders quickly rescued Thanasekharan, but his two-wheeler remained submerged.

A JCB machine was brought in to widen the water passage and facilitate the drainage of sewage and rainwater. The municipal corporation's recovery vehicle was deployed to search for the submerged two-wheeler, but the high water levels hampered the efforts.

Tiruppur MLA Selvaraj, DMK South City Secretary T.K.T. Nagarajan, Councilor P.R. Senthilkumar, and Assistant Police Commissioner Anil Kumar visited the site to expedite the rescue and repair operations.

The road from Universal Theater to the electric crematorium has been closed to traffic as municipal officials continue their efforts to repair the damaged underground sewage system and restore normalcy in the area.
