Heavy Rain in Coimbatore: Residents Suffer as Houses Flooded

Heavy rains in Coimbatore have led to flooding in Aruna Nagar area, with houses and roads submerged. Residents are stranded due to waterlogging, a situation attributed to the Corporation's lack of preparedness.

Coimbatore: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days in Coimbatore has resulted in waterlogging of houses and streets, leaving residents stranded and unable to leave their homes.

The heavy downpour is due to a trough of low pressure over South Tamil Nadu and the South-Western Bay of Bengal. Various districts in Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, and Theni, have been experiencing heavy rainfall for the past two days.

Aruna Nagar, located in the Nallampalaiyam area of Coimbatore, is home to thousands of houses. This area has been repeatedly facing issues of water intrusion into homes and waterlogging on roads during rainy seasons. Despite numerous complaints lodged by the residents with the Corporation officials, no action has been taken to address this recurring problem.

Residents have consistently demanded that basic infrastructure in the area be repaired and proper drainage systems be put in place before the onset of the monsoon season. However, these requests have been largely ignored.

In this situation, the heavy rain today (13.10.2024) has caused severe flooding in the area, with rainwater accumulating in houses and roads, resembling a river. This has left the residents of the area unable to leave their homes. The public has urged the Corporation officials to take immediate action to pump out the rainwater and provide relief.

The recurring nature of this issue highlights the lack of preparedness on the part of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation. Residents are calling for long-term solutions to prevent such flooding in the future and ensure their safety during monsoon seasons.
