MP K. Subbarayan Urges Expansion of Salem-Chengapalli Highway to Six Lanes

Tiruppur MP K. Subbarayan has requested the Central government to expand the 102.5 km stretch of Salem-Chengapalli National Highway 544 from four lanes to six lanes due to increased traffic congestion.

Coimbatore: Tiruppur MP K. Subbarayan has called for the expansion of the Salem-Chengapalli stretch of National Highway 544 from four lanes to six lanes, citing a significant increase in vehicular traffic over recent years.

In a letter addressed to Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Subbarayan emphasized the importance of the 102.5 km stretch, which serves as a crucial link between Salem, Namakkal, Erode, and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, and extends to Palakkad, Thrissur, and Kochi in Kerala.

The MP pointed out that while the 54 km stretch between Chengapalli and Coimbatore has already been developed into a six-lane expressway, the remaining 102.5 km from Chengapalli to Salem continues to operate as a four-lane highway. This disparity has led to increased traffic congestion and related issues.

Subbarayan highlighted the pressing need for expansion, stating that approximately 30,000 vehicles traverse this highway daily. The resulting traffic congestion not only causes inconvenience to commuters but also leads to increased fuel consumption and higher carbon emissions, raising environmental concerns.

The expansion of this stretch to a six-lane expressway is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and potentially decrease fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This development would significantly improve connectivity between major cities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, potentially boosting economic activities in the region.
