Pollachi Municipality Warns Tax Evaders: 15-Day Grace Period Before Strict Action

Pollachi Municipality Commissioner warns tax evaders, giving a 15-day grace period to clear dues. Failure to comply will result in seizure actions. The municipality faces a significant revenue shortfall of ₹28.84 crore over the past two years.

Coimbatore: The Pollachi Municipality has issued a stern warning to tax evaders, granting them a 15-day grace period to clear their dues. The municipality's commissioner, Ganesan, has cautioned that failure to comply will result in seizure actions.

The municipality is facing a significant revenue shortfall, with outstanding dues amounting to ₹28.84 crore over the past two years. This includes property tax, vacant land tax, water charges, professional tax, garbage service fees, and underground sewerage charges.

For the previous year, the outstanding amounts are: ₹7.79 crore in property tax, ₹1.99 crore in vacant land tax, ₹64.42 lakh in water charges, ₹2.85 crore in professional tax, ₹33 lakh in garbage service fees, and ₹45 lakh in underground sewerage charges. The current year's dues are even higher, with property tax alone amounting to ₹12.83 crore.

Commissioner Ganesan stated that property tax can be paid in two installments - April for the first half of the year and October for the second half - with a 5% discount. He emphasized that all taxes must be paid without arrears by September for the first half and March for the second half of the year.

The municipality has outlined a series of actions against defaulters, including:

1. Publicizing names of tax defaulters on notice boards in public places

2. Disconnecting water supply

3. Initiating seizure proceedings

The commissioner also highlighted the issue of tax evasion, where some property owners are paying residential rates while using the premises for commercial purposes. Others are underreporting the size of their buildings to pay lower taxes.

To address these issues, the municipality is offering a 15-day window for voluntary disclosure and correction of tax assessments. After this period, revenue officials will conduct on-site inspections, impose fines, and initiate seizure proceedings for buildings found evading taxes.

For vacant land tax defaulters, the municipality plans to notify the Registration Department to block property registrations. The commissioner urged all taxpayers to cooperate and clear their dues immediately to avoid strict action.
