Quinquennial Review Meeting of All India Network Project on Agricultural Acarology Held at TNAU

The Quinquennial Review Meeting 2012-2023 of the All India Network Project on Agricultural Acarology was held at TNAU, Coimbatore on September 11, 2024. The event focused on agricultural mite pests, research developments, and future strategies.


Coimbatore: The Department of Agricultural Entomology at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) hosted the Quinquennial Review Meeting 2012-2023 of the All India Network Project on Agricultural Acarology on September 11, 2024.



The event brought together experts and researchers to discuss advancements in agricultural acarology and outline future strategies.

Dr. M. Shanthi, Director of CPPS, delivered the inaugural address, highlighting the genesis of acarology at TNAU and the objectives of the AINP Acarology project. She emphasized emerging mite pests of crops, screening of genotypes in chilli and rice, mass multiplication of predatory mites, and the development of weather-based prediction models for mite pests.



Dr. N.K. Krishna Kumar, Former DDG (Horticulture) and chairman of the QRT, stressed the importance of monitoring invasive pest species, integrated management of mite pests, and creating awareness about invasive pests among farmers. He encouraged students to aspire for national-level positions and highlighted the significance of estimating crop loss in monetary terms.

Dr. Subash Chander, Director of NCIPM, emphasized the influence of climate change on pest outbreaks and advocated for non-chemical methods of pest management to ensure sustainable food production. Dr. K. Ramaraju, former Director of Research at TNAU, shared insights on the occurrence of different mite species in Tamil Nadu.

The event also saw participation from other notable figures, including Dr. C. Chinnamade Gowda, Network Coordinator of AINP on Agricultural Acarology, Dr. N. Srinivasa, Former Dean (PGS) of UAS, Bangalore, and Dr. Ravinder Singh Chandel, (Rtd) Professor and Head (Ento) from CSKHPKV, Palampur.



Scientists, students, and faculty members from the Department of Agricultural Entomology, along with Soil arthropod Scientists from the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, participated in the meeting. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. E. Sumathi, Professor of Entomology.
