Coimbatore: In a significant crackdown on illegal gutka trade, the Peelamedu police in Coimbatore seized 458 kilograms of gutka and arrested two individuals on September 6. The operation was carried out by Inspector Senthilkumar and Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar of the Peelamedu police station.

The police officers were on routine patrol near a temple in the Gandhi Nagar area of Peelamedu when they intercepted a four-wheeler for inspection. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered 458 kg of gutka, which was immediately confiscated.

Following the seizure, the police arrested two individuals involved in the transportation of the contraband. The arrested were identified as Ramkumar (34) from V.K. Road, A.T. Colony, and Sarvan Giri (29) from Rajasthan state. A third suspect, identified as Mukesh, managed to evade arrest and is currently absconding.

In addition to the gutka, the police also seized a van, a moped, and two mobile phones from the arrested individuals. The seizure of such a large quantity of gutka highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the illegal trade of banned tobacco products.

This operation underscores the vigilance of the Coimbatore police in combating the distribution of prohibited substances. The authorities are likely to intensify their efforts to apprehend the absconding suspect and investigate potential wider networks involved in the gutka trade in the region.
