Coimbatore: The Coimbatore International Airport reported steady passenger traffic on August 27, 2024, with a total of 54 domestic flights and 4 international flights handling 9,074 and 598 passengers respectively, according to data from the Airport Authority of India.

Despite the current traffic, industry experts believe there is significant potential for growth. It is estimated that the airport could handle up to 10,000 domestic passengers and 1,500 international passengers daily with its existing infrastructure.

In light of this potential, the Kongu Global Forum has put forward several requests to boost air connectivity from Coimbatore. They have appealed to the Minister of Civil Aviation to include Coimbatore as the 19th Point of Call Airport in the ASEAN Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), which would allow foreign carriers from ten South East Asian countries to operate flights to Coimbatore.

The forum has also made specific requests to various airlines. They have asked Air India to introduce double daily flights to Bangalore and direct flights to Delhi. Indigo has been requested to start international flights to Doha in a codeshare with Qatar Airways and to introduce services to Colombo.

Air India Express has been approached to commence services to Chennai and Hyderabad, along with one-stop services to Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Varanasi. The forum has also requested daytime flights to Singapore three days a week.

Furthermore, the Kongu Global Forum has reached out to Fly Dubai to start operations from Coimbatore, which is a point of call airport for carriers based in Dubai, UAE.

The domestic city-pair data for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024 (April-June) shows strong numbers from the four metro cities. The data also indicates that Hyderabad and Mumbai routes need additional services, while Pune appears ready for a second service. Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Jaipur are showing positive numbers, and cargo figures are reportedly impressive.

These developments and requests highlight the growing importance of Coimbatore International Airport and its potential to become a major air transport hub in South India.
