“For the Family, By the Family”: PM Modi Attacks DMK’s Politics

Campaigning in Coimbatore for NDA candidates contesting in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Avanashi constituencies, PM Modi launched a sharp attack on the DMK government, alleging nepotism, corruption, lack of vision and obstruction of Central welfare schemes reaching Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a campaign trail in Coimbatore to garner support for NDA candidates contesting in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Avanashi constituencies, addressed a massive public gathering at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex on Saturday evening.

During his speech, Modi strongly criticised the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, accusing it of promoting dynasty politics and functioning only for one family. He said the DMK government was “for the family, by the family and of the family.”

He alleged that power and influence were concentrated within one family, stating that the father is the Chief Minister, the son is the Deputy Chief Minister, and another family member is a Member of Parliament. He further said other members of the same family control major business interests including media houses and movie production companies, while the welfare of the people has been ignored.

He said the DMK government was more focused on increasing the wealth and influence of family members rather than improving governance or reducing the burden on the people. Referring to the State’s debt burden, Modi claimed that while liabilities on citizens continue to rise, the ruling family has concentrated only on enriching itself.

The Prime Minister further alleged that there was no governance vision in Tamil Nadu and accused both the DMK and its ally Indian National Congress of promoting family-based politics.

Modi also targeted the DMK candidate in Coimbatore, alleging that the party had fielded a corrupt person and recalling corruption allegations and cases, including those linked to TASMAC.

Contrasting this with the BJP, Modi said there was no nepotism in his party and leaders rise through grassroots work and merit. Citing C. P. Radhakrishnan as an example, he said leaders from ordinary backgrounds are recognised and elevated through dedication and service.

Modi also stressed the need for a “double-engine government,” stating that Tamil Nadu would benefit if like-minded governments ruled both at the Centre and in the State. He alleged that the present State government has been obstructing several Central welfare schemes from fully reaching beneficiaries.

Claiming that the Union government had allocated significant funds for Tamil Nadu’s welfare and development over the last 11 years, Modi highlighted housing, infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives. Referring to the PM rooftop solar subsidy scheme, he said only a limited number of households in Coimbatore had benefited so far.

Urging voters to reject the DMK government, Modi appealed for support to the NDA alliance and said a government led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami in Tamil Nadu, with support from the Centre, would ensure faster development and smoother implementation of welfare schemes.
