Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation celebrated the 78th Independence Day with great enthusiasm at its main office. Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan led the festivities, which included flag hoisting, cultural performances, and a tree planting initiative.

The day began with Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statue at the corporation office. He then proceeded to hoist the national flag at the Victoria Hall premises, saluting it as a mark of respect.

Following the flag hoisting ceremony, the Deputy Mayor honored Gothanavalli, the chairperson of the Thiyagi G.P. Velan Foundation and a social activist, by presenting her with a shawl. The event then moved on to a tree planting ceremony at the corporation office, where Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan, former Mayor Kalpana, and social activist Gothanavalli participated in planting saplings.

The celebration continued with a series of cultural performances by school students. The audience was treated to Bharatanatyam dances, songs, speeches, and folk art presentations. Additionally, self-defense demonstrations including Silambam and Karate were showcased.

One of the highlights of the event was a human pyramid formed by school students holding the national flag, which left spectators in awe. This display of patriotism and coordination was particularly impressive.

The festivities concluded with Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan distributing prizes to the school students who participated in the cultural and self-defense performances. The prizes were a recognition of the students' talents and efforts in making the Independence Day celebration a memorable one.

The 78th Independence Day celebration at the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation not only commemorated the nation's freedom but also showcased the city's rich cultural heritage and the enthusiasm of its younger generation in participating in patriotic events.
