Tirupur: Forest officials have arrested five individuals for poaching a spotted Sambar Deer in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district. The arrest came following a tip-off about illegal hunting activities in the Jambukkalkaradu area.

The Anamalai Tiger Reserve is home to various wildlife species including elephants, tigers, deer, leopards, and wild buffaloes. Forest department officials conduct regular patrols to ensure the protection of the forest and its water resources. Acting on secret information about Sambar Deer poaching in the Jambukkalkaradu area, a team of forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted a search operation in the Andiyagoundanur area.

During the operation, the officials apprehended five suspicious individuals carrying bags. The suspects were taken to the Udumalaipettai Forest Range office for questioning. The interrogation revealed that the accused had set up traps in the Jambukkalkaradu hill area to hunt spotted Sambar Deer and were attempting to sell the meat.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Prabu (24) and Bharatharaman (43) from Malaiyandikavundanur, Sathish (27) from Perumalpudur, and Manikam (24) and Vasanthakumar (25) from Elayamuthur. The forest department officials seized 4.5 kg of spotted deer meat from their possession.

Following the arrest, the forest department has registered a case against the five individuals. They have been remanded to judicial custody for their involvement in wildlife poaching, which is a serious offense under the Wildlife Protection Act.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by forest officials in protecting wildlife from poaching activities. The Anamalai Tiger Reserve authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities in the forest areas to help combat wildlife crimes and preserve the region's biodiversity.
