BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan Wins Defamation Case: Court Sentences Culprits to Imprisonment and Fine After 7 Years

Coimbatore court sentences two individuals to imprisonment and fine for defaming BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan on social media platforms seven years ago, setting a precedent for responsible online behavior.

Coimbatore: In a landmark judgment, a court has sentenced two individuals to imprisonment and imposed fines for defaming BJP National Women's Wing President and MLA Vanathi Srinivasan on social media platforms. The verdict comes seven years after the incident, highlighting the consequences of online defamation.

The case dates back to 2017 when Balasubramanian Adithan from Rathinapuri, Coimbatore, and Sankara Narayanan from Madurai posted defamatory content against Vanathi Srinivasan on social media platforms. The posts were allegedly made with malicious intent to tarnish the reputation of the MLA, who is known for her integrity in public life.

Vanathi Srinivasan filed a criminal defamation case against the duo at the Saidapet Criminal Court in Chennai. After a seven-year-long legal battle, the court today pronounced its verdict. Both defendants were sentenced to one day imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 each, totaling Rs. 20,000.

Reacting to the verdict on her X (formerly Twitter) page, Vanathi Srinivasan expressed hope that this judgment would serve as a lesson to those who misuse social media platforms to defame public figures. She stated, "Let this verdict be a lesson not only to those in public life who use social media but also to those who attempt to tarnish others' reputations."

The BJP leader also expressed her gratitude to the assistant lawyers who argued the case in court for seven years and to her party colleagues who stood by her throughout the legal process. This case sets a significant precedent for responsible behavior on social media platforms and underscores the legal consequences of online defamation.
