10 Wild Elephants Camp Near Residential Areas in Marudhamalai, Coimbatore

A herd of 10 wild elephants entered residential areas near Marudhamalai and Kembanur in Coimbatore on July 21. Forest officials drove them back into the forest after receiving alerts from residents.

Coimbatore: A herd of 10 wild elephants has been spotted camping near residential areas in Marudhamalai and Kembanur regions of Coimbatore, causing concern among local residents.

The elephants were first sighted on July 21 in the vicinity of Marudhamalai and Kembanur. The herd then entered the IOP Colony residential area at the foothills of Marudhamalai. Residents immediately alerted the forest department about the elephant intrusion.

Responding to the call, forest officials arrived at the scene and successfully drove the elephants back into the Marudhamalai forest area. However, the herd of 10 elephants was later seen roaming within the residential area again.

Residents captured videos of the elephants moving through the neighborhood on their mobile phones. These videos have since been circulating on social media platforms as of July 22, drawing attention to the increasing human-elephant conflicts in the region.

This incident is part of a larger pattern of elephant movements in Coimbatore. Wild elephants have been frequently spotted in various areas including Thadagam, Marudhamalai, and Thondamuthur, highlighting the need for better wildlife management strategies in urban-forest interface zones.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any potential conflicts between the elephants and residents. They have advised people to stay vigilant and report any elephant sightings immediately to the forest department.
