Protest Demands Creation of Sanitation Engineering Department to Prevent Manual Scavenging Deaths in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front staged a protest in Coimbatore, urging the establishment of Sanitation Engineering departments in higher education institutions to prevent manual scavenging deaths.


Coimbatore: Members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) staged a protest in front of the South Taluk Office in Coimbatore, demanding the creation of Sanitation Engineering departments in higher education institutions to prevent recurring deaths due to toxic gas in sewers.



The protesters raised slogans emphasizing several key demands. These included the establishment of Sanitation Engineering departments in IITs, IIMs, and Central Universities, launching a Sanitation Engineering department with adequate funding at Anna University of Technology, immediate testing and implementation of already invented devices, and importing modern machinery used in foreign countries.

The demonstration saw participation from the Coimbatore district committee members of TNUEF, as well as representatives from Marxist, Periyarist, and Ambedkarite organizations. The collective effort aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for technological and educational interventions to eliminate the dangerous practice of manual scavenging and prevent related fatalities.
