80th Oyilattam Performance Showcases Folk Art in Narasimhanaickenpalayam

Over 100 men and women participated in the 80th Oyilattam performance organized by Sangamam Arts Group in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore. The event aimed to promote and preserve traditional folk arts.


Coimbatore: The 80th Oyilattam performance, organized by Sangamam Arts Group, was held in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, featuring over 100 participants ranging from 6 to 60 years old. The event showcased the vibrant folk art form as part of an ongoing effort to nurture and promote traditional arts.

The celebration began with a special puja at the Vinayagar Temple in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, followed by a Mulaippari procession. The main event took place at the local playground, where participants took an oath under the leadership of Sangamam Arts Group coordinator Kanagaraj and assistant trainers Selvakumar Ganesan, Maheswari Selvakumar, Santhiya Selvakumar, and Vijayamohan.



The program commenced with the lighting of a traditional lamp by special guests and an introduction of the artists. A tribute was paid to freedom fighters, highlighting the cultural significance of the event. The performance featured various folk art forms, including Oyilattam, Kolattam, and Kummiyattam, accompanied by rural Pambai music performed by artists Sivasakthi Shanmugam and Sivakugan, with songs by singer Chinnasamy.

Dr. G. Mayilsamy, a natural agricultural scientist, attended the event and conveyed his best wishes to the group. The celebration also saw the participation of local dignitaries, including Panchayat President Maragatham Veerabathiran, District Councilor S. Karthik, former Panchayat President Anandan, and former Panchayat Union Chairman P.V. Mani.



Members of the technical arts group, including Malar Mohan, Felix, Manoj Kanagaraj, Suresh, Velavan, Prabhakaran, and Punithavathi Muthukumar, along with many local residents, attended the event to show their support. Commemorative gifts were distributed to all participants, recognizing their contribution to preserving this traditional art form.

The successful Oyilattam performance not only entertained the audience but also played a crucial role in keeping the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu alive, passing it on to younger generations.
