Public Demands Action Against Shopkeepers Harassing Women in Coimbatore's Periyakadai Street

Residents of Coimbatore are calling for action against shopkeepers in Periyakadai Street who allegedly harass women customers and force people to buy from their shops. The issue has persisted for years, with recent videos surfacing on social media.

Coimbatore: Thousands of shoppers from neighboring districts like Tirupur, Nilgiris, Salem, and Erode visit Coimbatore's Periyakadai Street daily to purchase goods. However, this bustling commercial area has become a hotspot for alleged harassment and misconduct by some shopkeepers.

Reports have emerged that shop employees along the street are forcing customers, especially women, to buy from their stores. Some intoxicated workers have been accused of creating disputes with women and the general public. This behavior has reportedly been ongoing for several years, with complaints that the police have turned a blind eye to the situation.

Recently, videos of these incidents have surfaced on social media platforms, bringing the issue to wider public attention. The public is now demanding that both the Coimbatore District Administration and the Coimbatore District Police take strict action against these offending shopkeepers.

Residents are calling for the freedom to shop at stores of their choice without harassment or coercion. On July 11, citizens formally raised their concerns, urging authorities to intervene and put an end to this longstanding problem in Periyakadai Street.

The situation has raised questions about customer rights and the need for a safe shopping environment in one of Coimbatore's busiest commercial areas. As the issue gains traction, many are hopeful that appropriate measures will be taken to ensure a hassle-free shopping experience for all visitors to Periyakadai Street.
