Residents Stage Road Roko Demanding Removal of TASMAC Shop on Gandhipuram-Sanganoor Road

Protesters blocked the Gandhipuram-Sanganoor road in Coimbatore on July 4, demanding the removal of a 20-year-old TASMAC shop located in a building owned by MP Kanagaraj Kumar.

Coimbatore: Residents of Gandhipuram area in Coimbatore staged a sudden road roko protest on July 4, demanding the removal of a TASMAC shop located on the Gandhipuram-Sanganoor road. The shop, which has been operational for the past 20 years, is situated in a building owned by Coimbatore Member of Parliament Kanagaraj Kumar.

The TASMAC outlet (Shop No. 1638) has been a point of contention for local residents, who have expressed their opposition to its presence in various stages over the years. Frustrated by the lack of resolution to their long-standing grievance, the protesters decided to take matters into their own hands by sitting on the road in front of the shop, effectively blocking traffic.

Upon receiving information about the protest, local police officials arrived at the scene and engaged in negotiations with the demonstrators. The police advised the protesters to submit a formal petition to the appropriate authorities to address their concerns, emphasizing that road blockades were not the appropriate way to voice their grievances.

Following the police intervention, the protesters dispersed from the area. However, they decided to take their complaint to a higher authority. Subsequently, they proceeded to the Coimbatore District Collector's office to submit a petition regarding the removal of the TASMAC shop.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between the local community and the presence of liquor outlets in residential areas. It also underscores the need for authorities to address such concerns promptly to prevent public demonstrations that disrupt daily life and traffic flow.
