Over 50 Primary School Teachers Protest at Town Hall, Coimbatore

Over 50 primary school teachers held a protest at the Chief Educational Officer's campus in Town Hall, Coimbatore, demanding the withdrawal of G.O. No. 243 affecting promotions and priorities of mostly female teachers.

Coimbatore: On June 28, more than 50 primary school teachers under the Tamil Nadu Primary Education Teachers' Association staged a protest at the Chief Educational Officer's office in Town Hall, Coimbatore.

The teachers demanded the withdrawal of Government Order No. 243, which they claim adversely affects the career progression and prioritization of nearly 90% of teachers, particularly impacting female educators. This government directive has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among teachers due to its implications on promotions.

The protesters have engaged in various attention-grabbing activities to draw the government's focus to their concerns. In response, senior government officials have promised to review the situation. In the meantime, the general transfer and scheduling discussions sparked further unrest and distress among the educators. The teachers are adamant about the necessity to revise this order, urging swift action from both the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Minister of School Education. They presented six demands during the protest, emphasizing the need for an immediate review and rectification of the current policies affecting their professional lives.
