Odisha Native Detained Under Goondas Act for Possessing 21 kg of Ganja in Coimbatore

The accused, Babidina Nayak, a native of Odisha, was arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), Perur, in connection with the seizure of 21 kg of ganja and remanded to judicial custody. The Coimbatore District Police have urged the public to report drug trafficking by calling 94981 81212 or via WhatsApp at 77081 00100, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.


Coimbatore: Coimbatore: A 20-year-old man from Odisha, arrested for allegedly possessing 21 kilograms of ganja for illegal sale in Coimbatore district, has been detained under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (Goondas Act) as a Drug Offender.

The accused, Babidina Nayak, a native of Odisha, was arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), Perur, in connection with the narcotics case and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

Considering his alleged involvement in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of public order, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan K. Reddy, IPS, recommended that preventive detention proceedings be initiated against him under the Goondas Act.

Acting on the recommendation, Coimbatore District Collector and District Magistrate Pavan Kumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, issued orders directing the preventive detention of the accused under the Goondas Act. Accordingly, Babidina Nayak has been detained as a Drug Offender and lodged in prison.

The Superintendent of Police said the district police will continue to invoke stringent legal provisions, including the Goondas Act, against individuals whose activities threaten public order or public health, particularly those involved in the illegal trafficking and sale of narcotic substances.

The police have also appealed to the public to shareinformation about drug trafficking and other criminal activities through the Coimbatore District Police’s ‘Nizhal’ QR code-based public safety platform, which allows citizens to submit information anonymously and confidentially.
