Illicit Liquor Tragedy in Kallakurichi Claims 47 Lives, Methanol Traced Back to Puducherry: CM MK Stalin

In Kallakurichi, an illicit liquor catastrophe resulted in 47 deaths with methanol sourced from Puducherry. CM MK Stalin informed that 159 hospitalized, 114 still under treatment.


Coimbatore: The grim toll in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy has risen to 47 fatalities as detailed by Chief Minister MK Stalin in the Legislative Assembly. The tragedy, which involved the consumption of toxic bootleg liquor, has also led to the hospitalization of 159 people.



Out of these, 47 individuals have passed away, with 114 patients still receiving medical attention. The illicit spirit was reportedly manufactured using methanol smuggled in from Puducherry, confirming the source of the toxic substance leading to the fatal incidents.

The Chief Minister conveyed the serious measures being taken to track down and penalize the culprits responsible for the distribution of the lethal brew. The local government and health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have stepped up enforcement of regulations surrounding the manufacture and sale of liquor.
