Cine-Director Ameer facing sedition charges appears in court

RAMANATHAPURAM: Noted cine director Ameer, who has been slapped with sedition charges for making inflammatory speeches in support of Sri Lankan Tamils, appeared before the Principal District and Sessions Court here today.

Ameer appeared before the Principal District Judge (in-charge) M.P.Ram in response to the non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against him by the judge, after he failed to appear before the Additional District and Sessions Court here on March 13.

M.Somasundaram, counsel for Ameer,  submitted that the director could not file a petition seeking to dispense with his personal appearance on March due to court boycott resorted to by the lawyers. The Judge, after recording the appearance of Ameer, recalled the NBW and adjourned the case for June 9 for further hearing.

The district unit of the ‘Q’ Branch police had charged Ameer and Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman on sedition charges for making remarks against the country in the protest organized by Tamil film industry in Rameswaram on October 19, 2008.
