Tamil Nadu Congress Human Rights Wing Demands Reduction of Boat House Charges in Valankulam

The Tamil Nadu Congress Human Rights Wing has submitted a petition under Rahmathullah Imayam's leadership requesting a reduction of boating charges at Valankulam under Coimbatore's Smart City project.

Coimbatore: The Valankulam Boat House, developed under the Smart City project of Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, has stirred the public with its high boating charges. The rates, ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 1000, are considered excessive by many who have expressed dissatisfaction since the facility's establishment.

Following the outcry, the Tamil Nadu Congress Human Rights unit, led by State Secretary Rahmathullah Imayam, has lodged a petition with the Coimbatore Municipal Commissioner's office, advocating for a reduction in the charges. Imayam stated that the high fees could hinder middle and low-income families from enjoying the facility. He insisted that decreasing the charges would attract more tourists and help reduce congestion issues and frequent accidents due to inadequate parking facilities.

Also emphasized by Imayam was the need for improved safety measures to manage the stray dog menace in the nearby Sugarcane Market area. He urged the municipal authorities to take immediate actions to ensure safety and promote tourism there.

Local feedback suggests potential benefits from reducing prices, from increased visitor numbers to better social inclusiveness. The boat house relocation process, previously mentioned, also highlights the evolving nature of this community asset.
