Kamal Haasan Discusses Impact of GST and Demonetization on Tirupur Garment Industry

During a campaign event in Tirupur, Kamal Haasan highlighted the detrimental effects of GST and demonetization on the local garment sector, emphasizing the need for economic relief and proper governance.

Coimbatore: Addressing the public during a campaign in Tirupur, leader of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan, criticized the Central Government's implementation of GST and the demonetization policy, stating they have severely impacted the garment industry in Tirupur over the last decade. He pointed out that despite Tirupur's global significance in apparel manufacturing, these policies have significantly slowed down the industry’s growth.

Haasan argued that the dual financial policies have not only led to a decline in business but have also failed to consider the wider needs of the global apparel market, which Tirupur primarily serves.

The event was attended by notable figures such as the Minister for Tamil Development and Information, M.P. Saminathan, local MLA Selvaraj, and Mayor Dineshkumar, among others. Haasan made a strong case for viewing the inefficiencies within these policies and their long-term repercussions on local economies.
