Construction of 'Tech City' Project in Somayampalayam, Coimbatore to Commence by End of This Year

The Tech City is planned to span approximately 321 acres in the Somayampalayam area, incorporating facilities necessary for IT companies including research and development labs, technology infrastructure, accommodation, commercial spaces, first-class offices, entertainment amenities, malls, uninterrupted power supply, regular water distribution, parks, and high-speed internet access.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu, a significant contributor to India's information technology (IT) sector, is set to enhance its position with the commencement of the 'Tech City' project construction in Coimbatore by the end of this year. Tamil Nadu aims to emerge as a superior IT hub, reinforcing its status among the leading states in the IT domain.

In the quest to become a central IT hub, Tamil Nadu announced the Tamil Nadu Tech City project at the beginning of 2023, targeting three locations within the state: Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hosur. Last year, the government stated that tech cities would be developed on 150 acres in Chennai's IT Corridor and on 500 acres in Hosur.

For Coimbatore's Tech City, the land identification process was underway, and last year, information surfaced about the potential selection of a substantial acreage near Saravanampatti on the Sathy Road for this project.

During his visit to Coimbatore in September last year, the Minister for Information Technology, Palanivel Thiagarajan, highlighted the significant progress in Coimbatore's IT sector and confirmed the identification of land for the advanced Tech City project. He assured that the action plan for implementing this project would soon be prepared and made public.

Amidst these developments, efforts to establish the Tech City in a government-private partnership near Saravanampatti have shifted towards the Somayampalayam village area. The Tech City is planned to span approximately 321 acres in the Somayampalayam area, incorporating facilities necessary for IT companies including research and development labs, technology infrastructure, accommodation, commercial spaces, first-class offices, entertainment amenities, malls, uninterrupted power supply, regular water distribution, parks, and high-speed internet access through optical fiber cable infrastructure.

This project is anticipated to further propel the growth of Coimbatore's IT sector. However, the chosen location's proximity to forested areas and elephant corridors has sparked discussions on the suitability of the site, suggesting that an alternate location might be more appropriate.

In this context, Tamil Nadu's Electronics Corporation (ELCOT) has conducted site evaluations, and reports suggest that the construction of the Tech City project is highly likely to begin by the end of this year, marking a significant step towards enhancing Tamil Nadu's IT infrastructure and capabilities.
