Coimbatore: The Union Budget for the financial year 2024-25 has unveiled a comprehensive plan for the expansion of railway infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. Significant funds have been allocated to various new rail line projects across the state, signaling a major boost to regional connectivity and economic development.

The projects include a diverse range of routes, each chosen for their strategic importance in connecting key areas. Among the notable allocations, the Tindivanam - Gingee - Tiruvannamalai line has been granted ₹100.01 crores for its 70 km stretch. Similarly, the Tindivanam - Nagari line, extending 179.2 km, will receive ₹350 crores, reflecting its larger scope.

Further investments include ₹50 crores for the 88.30 km Attipattu - Puttur line and ₹100.01 crores each for both the Erode - Palani (91.05 km) and Madurai - Tuticorin via Aruppukkottai (143.5 km) lines. The Chennai - Cuddalore line, passing through Mahabalipuram over 179.28 km, is set to receive ₹25 crores.

Other significant allocations include ₹25 crores for the Sriperambudur - Guduvanchery line, with a spur to Irungattukotti - Avadi - Sriperambudur covering 60 km, and ₹115 crores for the 36 km Morappur - Dharmapuri line. The shorter Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi line, spanning 17.2 km, has been allocated ₹1 crore, highlighting the government's focus on even the less extensive routes.

Moreover, the plan to connect the Peralam Karaikal line to the Northern end of Karaikal Port with an allocation of ₹10 crores showcases the government's commitment to enhancing port connectivity, crucial for trade and commerce.

This large-scale investment in rail infrastructure is expected to significantly improve transportation and economic activities, benefiting numerous sectors and communities across Tamil Nadu.
