Floating Portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Bharathiyar Painted in Water to Celebrate Republic Day

Coimbatore-based artist UMT Raja creates water-soluble portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Bharathiyar in celebration of India's 75th Republic Day.

Coimbatore: In a unique tribute to India's 75th Republic Day, Coimbatore's jewelry designer and artist, UMT Raja, has crafted floating portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Mahakavi Bharathiyar using water-soluble colors and flour. These portraits were designed in the Kuniamuthur area of Coimbatore, marking an innovative celebration of the national festival.

Typically, these powders dissolve in water within a short period, making the art fleeting and transient. The creation of these two portraits in water signifies the special tribute to these great leaders.

Raja mentioned that the idea behind these water portraits is to symbolize that the spirit of these national leaders should always reside in our hearts. The portraits, drawn on the water surface, illustrate the transient yet impactful nature of their legacies.

The creative endeavor has garnered attention for its unique medium and significant message. It serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Gandhi and Bharathiyar on Indian history and culture.
