The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for sesame.

India is the second largest producer of sesame in the World next to Sudan. India is the largest exporter of sesame in the World and export majority to United States of America, Vietnam and Russia. Sesame is grown both under kharif and rabi season in India. According to the estimates of Crop Forecast Coordination Centre (CFCC), area is on decline from 13.44 lakh hectare in 2022-23 to 12.43 lakh hectare in 2023-24 for kharif sown crop and from 0.27 lakh hectare in 2022-23 to 0.16 lakh hectare in 2023-24 under rabi season. Major states growing sesame are West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

In Tamil Nadu, sesame production was around 2.79 lakh tonnes from an area of 4.7 lakh hectare during 2021-22. The productivity of sesame in Tamil Nadu is 589 kg/ha. Viluppuram, Thanjavur, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Salem, Thiruvanamalai and Thiruvallur are the major districts that contribute about 66 per cent area and 65 per cent of the production of sesame in the state.

Sesame is sown in Tamil Nadu during April – May and December- January. It is cultivated in a small area as a summer crop under irrigated conditions and widely preferred for its qualities of high drought tolerance and the highest oil content. Two distinct types (white and black) of sesame seeds are popular though a few other varieties varying from red to brown are also available. Reduced area under rabi crop, supply shortage due to heavy rainfall in the season and increased crop demand will keep the price in upward side in the coming months.

Price forecasting team has analyzed the past 12 year prices for sesame that prevailed in Sivagiri Regulated Market of Erode district. As per the results of the time series analysis, the farm gate price of good quality of sesame during harvest (April’24) would be Rs. 170 - 175 per kg. Hence, the farmers are advised to take appropriate sowing decision. The price may subject to change based on the monsoon and arrivals from other states.
