Major Bus Collision in Valparai, Coimbatore: Over 30 Injured, 3 Critically, in Pongal Holiday Traffic

Coimbatore: A serious bus accident occurred in Valparai, Coimbatore District, on January 16, adding a tragic note to the Pongal festivities. The collision, involving two government buses, happened at around 5:50 PM near the new bus station. The buses were traveling from Valparai to Coimbatore and vice versa. The accident resulted in injuries to over 30 passengers, with 3 in critical condition.





The older of the two buses, coming from Vellamalai Estate, reportedly had brake failure, causing it to hit a parked Tata Sumo and a two-wheeler before colliding with the oncoming bus. The victims were rushed to Valparai Government Hospital, with the critically injured later transferred to a hospital in Coimbatore for advanced treatment.

This incident drew attention to the increased holiday traffic due to Pongal celebrations. Authorities have started an investigation into the accident. No fatalities have been reported, but the incident has raised concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety, especially during peak travel times.
