All Night Eraniyan Street Drama Enthralls Audiences in Sirumugai

The historic Eraniyan Therukoothu street play, a tradition over 300 years old, captivated audiences in Vellikuppampalayam near Sirumugai, showcasing the mythological event of Lord Narasimha defeating Eraniyan.


Coimbatore: The ancient tradition of Eraniyan Therukoothu came to life in the village of Vellikuppampalayam, near Sirumugai, last night. This over 300-year-old street drama, a significant part of local heritage, portrays the mythological tale of Lord Narasimha triumphing over the demon king Eraniyan.





Despite the cold night, residents of Sirumugai and neighboring areas remained awake to enjoy this spectacular performance, marking the celebration of the Pongal festival. The play is not only a form of entertainment but also a medium to preserve and pass down the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the region.
