Village panchayat presidents should be given an honorarium of Rs 10,000 per month - MLA Vanathi Srinivasan

MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has asked Rs 30,000 per month for municipal mayors, Rs 15,000 for deputy mayors, Rs 10,000 for municipal councillors, Rs 15,000 for municipal chairpersons and Rs 10,000 for municipal vice-presidents.


Coimbatore: In a statement, BJP women's wing national president and Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said that village panchayat presidents should be paid a honorarium of Rs 10000 by the government.

“Rs 30,000 per month for municipal mayors, Rs 15,000 for deputy mayors, Rs 10,000 for municipal councillors, Rs 15,000 for municipal chairpersons, Rs 10,000 for municipal vice-presidents.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an honorarium of Rs 5,000 for municipalities, Rs 10,000 for town panchayat presidents, Rs 5,000 for town panchayat vice-presidents and Rs 2,500 for town panchayat members.

Like members of Parliament and MLAs, it is necessary that representatives of local bodies should also be paid monthly honorarium. Half of the village panchayat presidents in Tamil Nadu are women as reservation has been given.Similarly, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes are also the most prominent village panchayat presidents.

Many of them, who are socially and economically oppressed, are struggling only for the needs of their families. At present, their honorarium is very low. Chief Minister M K Stalin should take steps to pay Rs 10,000 per month as honorarium to village panchayat presidents.
