The Vadavalli police arrested two persons within 24 hours in connection with the murder of Sasikumar (23) of Kalveerampalayam whose body was found in a secluded area behind Bharathiar University campus in Coimbatore. Police said the victim was allegedly strangled to death following a drunken altercation.
Coimbatore: The Vadavalli police have arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old man whose body was found in a secluded area behind the Bharathiar University campus in Coimbatore on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as R. Sasikumar (23) of Kalveerampalayam. His body was discovered on Thursday morning by local residents who had taken their cattle for grazing in the area. They alerted the Vadavalli police, who rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post mortem examination.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Sasikumar had been strangled to death.
Following an intensive investigation, the police arrested S. Akash (22), a native of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district who was residing at Bommanampalayam and working on a contract basis at Bharathiar University, and Tilak Suriya (23) of Kalveerampalayam.
According to the police, the trio had gathered at the secluded spot behind the university campus on Wednesday night to consume alcohol. During the drinking session, an argument allegedly broke out and escalated into a physical altercation, during which Akash and Suriya allegedly strangled Sasikumar to death before fleeing the scene.
As the police closed in on the suspects, Akash surrendered before the Village Administrative Officer at Vadavalli on Friday. Suriya was subsequently arrested by the investigating team led by Vadavalli Inspector P.R. Jagannathan.
Further investigation is under way.
