People of Coimbatore submits petition at collector's office seeking to stop mineral looting

The people of Coimbatore submits a petition to the Collectorate, calling for a ban on the smuggling of mineral resources from Coimbatore district to Kerala. This petition comes in the wake of several protests held by political parties, farmers' unions and the public over the past three months, in an effort to put an end to this illegal activity.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore residents have petitioned the Collectorate to ban the plundering of mineral resources.

Over the past three months, several political parties, farmers' unions and the general public have been staging several rounds of protests over the smuggling of mineral resources from Coimbatore district to Kerala.

The people of Coimbatore also submitted a memorandum to the district collector's office urging that mineral resource plundering be prohibited.

In their petition, they said the authorities should immediately stop mining of mineral resources for self-interest. The explosives used in stone quarrying should be utilised to control the fall of boulders on agricultural land.

The licencing of quarries that take up mineral resources in excess of the government's limits should be cancelled, and the right of quarries operating during night hours should be cancelled.

Drivers and cleaners who aid in mineral smuggling should be arrested under the Goondas Act. Owners who use fake passes will have to be jailed for 10 years.

No case should be registered against the villagers who stop the trucks engaged in looting of minerals. If there is a human-animal conflict and a human life is lost, 50 lakh saplings should be given. Many such demands have been reiterated in it.
